From the late 90s through the current times, a film movement has been taking the horror underground violently by storm. Known as the "New French Extremity," films under this umbrella are notable for their visceral scenes of explicit sex, gore, torture, uncomfortable topics, and a myriad of disorienting techniques designed to make the viewer uncomfortable. In essence, the New French Extremity is a horror sub genre where-in extreme, often sexually oriented acts of mutilation and violence are the focal point of the movies within. Think “ The Human Centipede ” with subtitles, and you basically have the gist of what movies within the New French Extremity category are all about. The French New Wave or ‘Nouvelle Vague’ is the most famous cinematic movement in history that began around the year 1960 and ended in the early ‘70s. Techniques we take for granted today were catapulted into mainstream use by the colossal exposure the most famous artists behind the Nouvelle Vague were afforded: People like Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Agnes Varda. Originating from that which is deemed “transgressive” or offensive, this new wave of extreme films does so under the origins of French film makers.
